New laws such as the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Fire Regulations Act 2022 have increased the responsibilities and potential punishment for the Responsible Person. This role begins with the Manager of Premises and now requires significant changes to working practices to fulfil the "duty of care" responsibilities and comply with the Law.

The government can fine and take legal action against premises operators who don't comply, with the severity of the punishment depending on the size of the premises and the severity of the breach. In extreme cases, operators may even face criminal charges.

However, there are some exceptions to these penalties. For example, if a premises operator can show that they've taken all reasonable steps to comply with the guidelines but still can't do so due to circumstances beyond their control.
